3 modules to fit with students' career choices

The International House Foundation Programme is designed to ensure that, on successful completion, all students gain automatic entry to a degree course at a top British university.

Through its flexible, modular approach, the programme can prepare students with a wide range of individual academic needs wishing to study a wide variety of subjects - from Engineering or Computing to Business Studies, Accounting and Finance.

All students must complete TWO COMPULSORY MODULES – English and Mathematics – PLUS ONE optional double module. As an integral part of the course students are required to demonstrate key computer-based skills, including spreadsheets and presentations. If necessary, training sessions are provided to help students achieve the ECDL qualification (European Computer Driving Licence).

The International House University Foundation Programme is made up of

All of the academic subject modules will be taught via a lecture/tutorial process that mirrors the style of teaching that students will encounter in University programmes in the UK.

Basic information will be delivered in lectures, while the individual’s understanding of the subject and their ability to utilise the information will be supported by tutorial work.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE MODULES

International House

These are designed to help students reach an IELTS band score of 6.5. They also help students prepare to successfully follow a UK university degree programme. This includes:

  • Understanding lectures and taking notes
  • Writing and presenting course work
  • Making oral presentations
  • Discussing ideas with staff and other students
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Independent learning skills
  • General essay and report writing skills
  • Planning, organising and structuring academic texts
  • Researching and writing a project

    MATHEMATICS (DOUBLE MODULE)

    International House

    The course aims to enable students to extend their mathematical knowledge and skills to the stage where they may progress successfully to a degree programme in the physical sciences, engineering, business studies or accounting and finance. The course delivers lectures on the following key topics and themes:

  • Algebra
  • Sequences and Series
  • Co-ordinate Geometry
  • Functions
  • Trigonometry
  • Calculus
  • Introduction to differential equations
  • Complex Number Theory
  • Vector Analysis

    PHYSICS (DOUBLE MODULE)

    International House

    The course covers a number of key concepts ranging from Mechanics and Materials to Fields and Waves. The course delivers lectures on the following key topics and themes:

  • Newtonian mechanics, including statics, linear and rotational dynamics
  • Forces and energy and their role in the molecular structure of matter
  • Properties of liquids and gases and thermodynamics
  • The role of fields, in particular the gravitational and electromagnetic fields
  • The description of natural phenomena and the widespread occurrence of oscillations and wave motion are stressed with examples taken from the physics of sound

    BUSINESS MODULE ONE: ECONOMICS AND FINANCE

    International House

    Course objectives: To provide a solid foundation in Macroeconomics and Financial Accounting.

    The primary focus of the course is dependent on both financial accounting and International economics.

  • Macroeconomics will provide the student with a basic understanding of how domestic and international economic change affects business organisations.
  • The element of Financial Accounting will introduce non-specialist students to basic financial and management accounting skills and techniques. The module will familiarise the students with the use, analysis and interpretation of accounting statements in addition to preparation of financial statements.

    BUSINESS MODULE TWO: THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT

    International House

    Course objectives: To introduce students to contemporary issues and controversies in the present business environment. It provides an introduction to:

  • Debates raised in the present global economy with regard to ethical issues relevant to business in the UK
  • The framework of the present business environment in the European Union
  • The module also aims to improve students' study skills within a business context in order to enable students to progress to a number of different business degree courses.
